9th-Nov-2012 10:03 pm - Keep trucking on Silent Hill
heather
I remember 6, or maybe it was 7, years ago getting the first nugget of news of Silent Hill potentially becoming a movie with Brotherhood of the Wolf's director, Christophe Gans, directing and Roger Avery helping with the screenplay. Being the fangirl I was, I followed every single step of pre-production, filming, and production, building up anticipation. I even went so far as figuring out what movie in the theaters would be the first with the Silent Hill trailer on the reel, and went to go see it. (It was the 2nd Underworld movie if I recall, and I had already seen the Silent Hill trailer 1,000x on the internet, but wanted to see it on the big screen)

April 21st comes, and I go see it in theaters the Friday it comes out. I saw it several more times in theaters, and despite enjoying the movie overall, constantly started to nitpick things and find more and more things wrong with it. At the end of the day it was an enjoyable movie, and aesthetically gorgeous and wonderful in creating the environment of Silent Hill, but I felt like the middle of the movie suffered from having too many people running around screaming, and became too focused on the "Order". Nevermind the fact that the first and 3rd games that surround the storyline wanted Alessa/Heather/Cheryl for the birth of their god. NOT to burn her as a "witch" as the first movie seemed to focus on.

Its now 2012 and Silent Hill: Revelations has been out for a month. Even when I heard rumors and tidbits of people coming onto the project and leaving, I just had a total apathy towards the whole thing. I knew if I followed everything I would just build up anticipation in my head because I would WANT it to be good, but it just wouldn't be good. Nevermind that Silent Hill 3, the game the 2nd movie is based off of, is quite possibly one of the most important games when it comes to my love of survival horror. All because its the first Silent Hill game I was introduced to and it scared the pants off of me.

So I didn't seek out information, and skimmed any that I might've stumbled across. I was originally gun ho about seeing a midnight showing on Thursday/Friday opening night, but life happens, and the closer to the release date it got, the more apathetic I became. The trailer made it looked cheesy, I had no doubt in my mind that it would be silly and not capture the third game at all, and it just wasn't that important to me.

I go to see a matinee showing, and end up having to see it in 3D despite me being completely against what I find a gimmicky use of film, and prepared myself for a lot of eyerolling and being upset and mad. Imagine my surprise when I found myself NOT getting mad at the film every 5 minutes while watching it, and actually being tickled and enjoying the damn thing.

Yes I said it, and I realize its probably a very unpopular opinion among the fanatic Silent Hill community, especially pre-Homecoming fans like myself, but I'll say it again. I ENOYED SILENT HILL: REVELATIONS.

Now, that's not to say that it was a GOOD movie in the sense that Looper or Shutter Island or 28 Days Later are GOOD movies. There are a lot of flaws within this little Silent Hill film, and actually more than a few things that I still didn't enjoy. The film does a poor job of being able to stand on its own. The focus of the first movie was the mother(because according to Gans, Harry "acts like a mother would" in the games while searching for his lost child. Because, you know, god forbid a father gives a damn and is worried about their child) searching for her lost adopted child within Silent Hill, which the Order had kidnapped to bind back with Alessa so they could kill her because she was the source of the town's evil and put them in a living hell since they tried to burn her for a witch, or something.

I won't bore you with how much this differs from the first games. But needless the say the first and third games never deviated from the fact that Alessa's purpose was to be the mother of their god, Samael. In any event at first it seems like in SH: REVELATIONS they are luring Heather/Sharon back to Silent Hill so they can bind her back with Alessa so they can kill her and get out of their living hell. However halfway through the movie its revealed that the new leader of the cult, Claudia, actually wants Heather so they can give birth to their god.

Yes that's right, the new creators of the film tried to swing the storyline back on its RIGHTFUL track. The problem? It doesn't really make sense why Claudia wants this to happen, and the movie doesn't do a very good job of selling this sudden change in goal. As an avid player of the games, and a person with more than average knowledge of the lore of Silent Hill, I didn't need explanation. My brain went, FUCKING FINALLY, and was able to stop getting mad and arguing internally with the damned movie that it was being stupid and ruining things.

The movie did suffer from a few cheap "BOO" moments and specific "3D shots" that I find ridiculous. However, overall, it had a creepy eery feel, Heather was ALONE most of her journey, and it including a few key scenes from the 3rd game. Mannequin room anyone? That room scared the shit out of me in the games, and while the movie wasn't exactly the same, they HAD a mannequin room, which just told me the creators at least somewhat understood the game.

I was also worried about the change of Vincent from being a slightly older man Heather comes across in Silent Hill in the games to a boy the same age as Heather. While the forced romance between the two was "meh" for me, his essential role in Heather's journey was more or less the same. Or maybe I just have a soft spot for Kit Harrington since he plays Jon Snow in Game of Thrones, and I feel bad that he's being given butchered versions of the characters he play. (TV!Jon Snow is a rant for a different day)

Probably the biggest reason I was able to enjoy SH: REVELATIONS, and admitably its not a very good reason, is the nod to fans of the game series throughout the movie. In the beginning of the movie Sean Bean's character and Heather are discussing how they're changing names. Sean Bean's character has changed his name to Harry to hide from the cops, Heather was originally Sharon, then Cheryl in the last town, and now Heather. Heather comments that they're still the same person despite the changes in names, what I found was an acknowledgment to fan complaints about the name changes in the first movie.

There is also HUGE fan wank at the end. Not a complete homage to Silent Hill 2 but something that could allude to it happens at the end. As well as the fact that Heather gets picked up by a semi truck driver named Travis, who says he was at the town years ago(a nod to Origins) and while they drive away there's a prison bus being escorted by police cars going TO Silent Hill (a nod to Downpour)

Again somewhat cheesy, and completely fanwanky, but it tickled the ever living hell out of me. Maybe it helps that Silent Hill 3, in all its gore, creepy atmosphere, and craziness, is a game that's fun at the heart of it. Heather is quite possibly the best female video game character created 'thus far, in that she's tough, real, and completely sarcastic in reaction to the odd things she comes across. The game also goes through periods of showing that its not trying to take itself TOO seriously, what with the puking of fetuses, and someone else shoving it down their throat so the god can still be born. (Sadly this scene did not make it into the movie)

I don't expect that this movie will be popular among the masses, or even the Silent Hill community. Hell I will readily admit that the first Silent Hill movie, despite all its adaptation flaws, was a more intelligent movie and overall done better. But SH: Revelations is a fun romp through the town, and did a fairly good job of recreating Heather's journey through the town and finding herself. It could definitely be told better, and could have been done better. But I was expecting a complete mess of a movie, and was given something slightly above mediocre.

Hey everyone, me again, with yet another dog from my school that needs a home. This is Isaac.

Photobucket

He's been in our program since March. Is currently being treated for heartworm. His original foster home could no longer keep him and is now back at the school's kennel. Isaac does NOT do well in a kennel environment and needs a home to at the very least be fostered at. Due to his issues in the kennel and his heartworm positive status he will be euthanized if he does not receive a home by the end of this week. If you have any further questions ask me or contact my school. Contact information should be on their adoption page.

Again we're in the Chicago area. Sorry for the cross-posting

Woke up at 5:15am, hit the snooze, pulled myself out of bed at 5:35am. Brushed my teeth, put on my scrubs, threw left over Olive Garden into a tupperware. Thanked Dale for being awesome for taking out Zepplin and feeding the critters.

Picked up Clarissa, drove to school. Went to Clin Lab and looked at some blood under a microscope, practicing filling out a form for a CBC. Went to An Tech and restrained a cat for a saphenous blood draw, then attempted and succeeded a saphenous blood draw myself. Went to Clin Med and learned about a bunch of different skin tumors. Went to lunch where I ate my left overs and chit chatted with the girls. Went to Pharmacology where we finished up antibiotics and started learning antifungals. Took Samara out for training and some one and on time for 20 minutes. Clarissa and I then went to Speedway for some sweet tea, and drove home.

I'm now sitting on the couch with Macgyver half on my lap and Zepplin laying down against me, watching the 3rd season of Buffy. Will watch a couple episodes and then cook homemade popcorn chicken with some mac 'n cheese. Probably watch some more Buffy or some Dead Like Me, then off I hop onto WoW for some raiding where we will hopefully be awesome and take down a bunch of bosses.

The End :P

Gonna try and finish up this silly meme.... O.o

24th-Jan-2011 10:27 am - Cutler Weak?
Heather/Drawn
I have to get this off my chest because I honestly can not believe what I'm hearing on sports radio and other media outlets.

Its fine to be mad at the Bears for last night's performance. It didn't seem like they were really trying that first half, and it was just awful to watch. Both the defense and the offense did horrible that first quarter, and the offense just never seemed to show up that first half. Its also fine to be mad at Lovie (what the hell were you thinking for calling that time out on that last drive? That was completely ridiculous) and to be mad at the coaching staff in general for Todd Collins being 2nd string for some god awful reason instead of Caleb Hanie.

But saying Cutler quit on his team? That he WANTED to be benched? That he's a wuss and a sissy? Seriously? I can't believe it. Chicago ESPN radio is tootin' this horn and about the only media outlet I hear calling this for what it is, rubbish, is 670 the Score. Everyone else, all the fans included, are jumping on this guy's back.

And look, I understand, Cutler isn't that likeable. I don't like him much myself, I think he needs to do a better job showing he's a leader. I think he needs to stop being so full of himself. But I will never, ever, question this QB's toughness. He's about the toughest quarterback I can think of, and he HAS to be. Since our o-line is so God awful horrible and he's sacked so many times. How dare you Chicago, how DARE you question how tough he is, and call him a quitter. I shouldn't be surprised since this city is so quick to turn on their own team but Christ. I will never question Cutler's competitive nature, and I will always stand behind him in this instance until proven otherwise, that he fought to still play in that game and was overruled. You can NOT draw conclusions that he didn't want to play based on 5 secs of footage we're shown of him on the sideline. You say you saw him standing on his own two feet on looking despondent? Christ that was for 5 secs. And just because you can balance your weight to be on mostly one leg while standing does not mean you're hale enough to throw a football, maneuver like he has to, etc.

I am disgusted at NFL players past and present calling him out, and I'm just so fed up with Chicago in general not back up their team. There are a lot of things to be unhappy with about last night's game, and a lot of reasons to be mad at Cutler, but him being benched is not one of them.

I have no idea what is tickling my fancy today. I suppose, since I just got back from the canceled Mutt Strut and learned its puppy mill awareness day, I shall do another dog-related rant.

I briefly touched upon this in my dog nerd post a while back where I also linked to my puppy mill rant from several years ago. But it doesn't hurt to touch upon the issue again.

I don't care what kind of pet store it is, if they sell puppies or kittens, I stay away from it. Majority of time the puppies are going to be from a puppy mill. There are TONS of links on what a puppy mill is, stoppuppymills.org being my main go to site for information. However if you have no idea what one is, its essentially a place where people over-breed dogs for profit. And I'm not talking about a handful of damas that are giving birth, these are rows and rows and rows of dogs crammed into cages, constantly breeding. The conditions are filthy and the dogs are all unhealthy.

Petland is the most well known pet store chain that sells puppies. And the biggest store that activists have been trying to bring down. The employees are told that the puppies are from local breeders, but its all lies. The paperwork has names of companies that the puppies come from that are known brokers for puppy mills. Animal Planet actually did a special awhile back ON Petland, where it followed an undercover investigator going to known puppy mills, trying to get video footage to help in a case where owners of Petland puppies are trying to sue Petland for selling dogs from these places.

Even if some of these pet stores DO get puppies from local breeders, I still wouldn't touch these dogs with a 10 foot pole. Any RESPONSIBLE breeder is going to want to screen and choose a home for their puppies ON THEIR OWN, and not leave it up to a pet store's discretion. Even Petco and Petland who house cats that are up for adoption can't adopt out the cats without the adoption rep approving of the adopter's application first. The fact that there's ma and pop type shops that are selling dogs and cats, and trying to make it seem okay that they're from local breeders, upsets me.

If its too much work for you to research and find a responsible breeder for your new addition to the family, you PROBABLY SHOULD NOT BE GETTING A DOG!!!! Dogs are a LOT of work, a HELL of a lot more work than the "inconvenience" of researching and finding the right dog for your home.

So, visit your local shelters, take time to research and find the right dog. I'm a huge adopt over buy advocate, however if you are dead set on a specific breed, and are unable to find the right one through rescues, find a responsible breeder. Someone who health tests their dogs and is active in the dog community (I prefer dog sports over dog shows personally). And for crying out loud VISIT the home of the breeder, ASK to see the mother and/or father of the litter you're looking at. If the mother/father is shy, fearful, aggressive, anything that sets alarm bells off in your head, DO NOT BUY THEIR PUPPIES. You want a mother and father that have a good temperament and look healthy.

I leave you with that to chew on and some old old posters I designed a few years ago on puppy mills :P

4th-Jun-2010 08:28 am - Day XXI - A Recipe
gaius six love!
I swear I will finish through these eventually!!!

This isn't a personal recipe of mine, but its one of my favorite dishes to make. I usually cook the chicken, cut it into pieces, and put it in a salad or with some rice for a full meal. I will also sometimes use chicken thighs opposed to breasts, ad I prefer dark meat to white.

Spicy Chicken Breasts

Ingredients
2 1/2 tablespoons paprika
2 tablespoons garlic powder
1 tablespoon salt
1 tablespoon onion powder
1 tablespoon dried thyme
1 tablespoon ground cayenne pepper
1 tablespoon ground black pepper
4 skinless, boneless chicken breast halves

Directions
1.In a medium bowl, mix together the paprika, garlic powder, salt, onion powder, thyme, cayenne pepper, and ground black pepper. Set aside about 3 tablespoons of this seasoning mixture for the chicken; store the remainder in an airtight container for later use (for seasoning fish, meats, or vegetables).

2.Preheat grill for medium-high heat. Rub some of the reserved 3 tablespoons of seasoning onto both sides of the chicken breasts.

3.Lightly oil the grill grate. Place chicken on the grill, and cook for 6 to 8 minutes on each side, until juices run clear.

This was the standard recipe. As I don't have a grill I cook mine on a pan. I just usually dredge the chicken through the bowl of spice, rub it in there to make sure I didn't miss a spot, lightly oil a pan, and cook on both sides until the chicken's done. I REALLY want to use this for the grill, however I don't own one. Curse the world!

10th-May-2010 09:21 pm - Day XX - A Hobby of Yours
Arya
Haha, I knew I'd drop off on this eventually!!

I'd say a hobby of mine is video gaming. While I'm not ALWAYS gaming, I am usually in the middle of some sort of game. My favorite series is Silent Hill with Silent Hill 2 being my favorite of the series. I also love God of War, Shadow of Colossus, Okami, Fatal Frame, Indigo Prophecy, Heavy Rain, and Infamous. FFVII will always be near and dear to my heart as well.

I recently finished GoWIII which was the one of the most perfect combat games I've ever played. I'm currently trying to finish Dante's Inferno which is becoming increasingly difficult. I was really enjoying the game when I first played it, however I took a break to play through God of War III, and now the combat just seems unresponsive, slow, sluggish, and all in all does not do as well of a job in ripping off the GoW combat system like I originally thought it did.

I'm also playing through Brutal Legend and the new Ratchet and Clank, with having pre ordered the special edition of Alan Wake (which I'm ridiculously excited for).

I have also finished Bioshock 2 recently which was actually pretty good for a sequel, although not near as good as its predecessor. I also played Gears of War for the first time this past weekend, and am now playing through GoWII with Dale on coop.

In general I find video games to be a nice interactive experience. I enjoy watching movies for the story and atmosphere. Video games are the same thing except almost better in a way, since you're actually apart of the story and world, and have a cause and effect for being there.

Speaking of which I think I hear Brutal Legend's metal riffs calling to me ;)
